Arrive at Caesarea Maritima, the port city of Herod the Great. Explore the extensive ruins including the Roman aqueduct and theater. Travel the ancient caravan route to Mount Carmel, where Elijah defeated the prophets of ba’al. At Megiddo, see the ruins of 20 cities superimposed on one another overlooking the Valley of Armageddon. View Nazareth, the boyhood home of Jesus, from the Mount of Precipice where an angry mob attempted to throw Jesus from the cliff.
Day 4 - Dec. 10 –Jesus in Galilee
Today’s boat ride on the Sea of Galilee will help you understand the special place this lake had in Jesus' ministry. Continue to Kursi, considered part of the region of the Gadarenes in Christ's time and remember where He cast the demons into the swine. Tel Dan, one of ancient Israel's boundary markers - "From Dan to Beersheba," is also on the itinerary along with a short drive to Caesarea Philippi, where Peter proclaimed that Jesus was the Messiah. In Capernaum, stand in the ruins of the 4th Century synagogue built on the site of the synagogue in which Jesus taught. See the excavations that include where Peter's house is thought to have been located. Finish the day at the peaceful Mount of Beatitudes overlooking the Sea of Galilee and reflect on the words of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.
Day 5 - Dec. 11 – Jesus in Galilee
Visit the recent excavations of Magdala, the hometown of Mary Magdalene. Gather at the River Jordan where you can remember or renew your baptism. Continue south to Beit Shean, a city continuously inhabited for over 5,000 years. Here Saul and his sons' bodies were hung from the walls of the city. The uncovered ruins date back to the Greek / Roman city that was part of the Decapolis of Jesus' day. See colonnaded streets with marble sidewalks, Roman public baths, and a theater. Visit Gideon’s Spring (Ein Harod), where Gideon chose his army of 300 by observing how they drank the water (Judges 7). Travel through the Jordan River Valley, the route often taken by Jesus and other Galileans as they traveled to and from Jerusalem. Parallel the ancient Roman road as you pass through the Judean Wilderness to view the Valley of the Shadow. From here, you can see St. George’s Monastery across the gorge. Arrive in Jerusalem and check-in to your hotel before enjoying dinner and overnight.
Day 6 - Dec. 12 – Jerusalem
Day 7 - Dec. 13 – Masada, Qumran and Dead Sea
Travel south to Masada, the spectacular mountaintop fortress of Herod the Great, famous as the last stronghold of the Jewish rebellion against the Romans from 70-73AD. Take the cable car to the top and peer down at the Roman camps and siege ramp below. At Qumran, learn about the mysterious Essenes community that once lived there. You’ll also learn about the discovery of the renowned Dead Sea Scrolls. Then visit the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth and have the opportunity to float in the salt and mineral-laden waters.
Day 8 - Dec. 14 – Jerusalem
Stand on the Mount of Olives for a remarkable view of the "Golden City" of Jerusalem and consider that this is the final place Jesus stood before ascending into heaven forty days after His resurrection. Visit the Church of the Pater Noster, posting the Lord's prayer in over 100 different languages on its walls. Take time to pray among the olive trees in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prayed the night He was betrayed with a kiss and arrested. View the remains of the 2,000 year old remains of the house of Caiaphas. Wander through the excavations of the City of David. Walk the steps to the Pool of Siloam, recently uncovered at the foot of the city and site of the healing of the blind man as recorded in John 9. We also plan to visit an area overlooking Shepherd's Fields where the announcement of the birth of our Lord was given by the angelic host.
Day 9 - Dec. 15 – Jerusalem
Enjoy free time and wander the Old City of Jerusalem. Visit Yad Vashem, the national holocaust memorial and museum. Reflect on the agony of the cross at Gordon’s Calvary and celebrate the joy of the resurrection at the Garden Tomb.
